Oglethorpe celebrates first-generation college students with a week of special events

Ahead of National First-Generation College Celebration Day on Nov. 8, ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉúTV uplifted its first-generation student population through a series of unique events that imparted helpful career-building skills and strengthened bonds. This year’s “First-Gen Week” offered students a mix of celebration, community and career-building events designed to both honor their achievements and provide valuable support.

The week kicked off with a lively photo booth where students could proudly share their first-gen stories, followed by a STEM-focused career panel and breakfast that connected students with industry professionals. Midweek, a networking lunch hour encouraged students to make new connections across campus, fostering mentorship and peer support. The celebration continued with an evening of recognition and reflection, culminating in a family picnic that welcomed loved ones to campus to share in the experience.

“I really enjoyed all the events during First-Gen Week — especially the picnic,” said Marlean Hernandez ’29. “I got to talk to some amazing people and I hope that I will be able to look to them in the future if I ever need help!”

In addition to the week’s programming, several Coca-Cola Scholarship recipients had the opportunity to attend a special lunch with Roxane Hamilton, senior finance manager at The Coca-Cola Company. There, students shared their experiences and personal goals, while also learning more about how the foundation continues to support first-generation students’ academic dreams. They also learned about upcoming professional development opportunities including mentorship initiatives, community engagement projects and networking events.

“Oglethorpe has a population of over 40% first-generation college students, often juggling school, jobs, commuting, student organizations and more.” said Raquel Manzo, assistant director of first-generation and student support programs. “The Department of Equity and Care was intentional about hosting events on different days and times on a wide variety of topics to truly focus on celebrating this population and their individual efforts.”

More than just a series of events, First-Gen Week reflects Oglethorpe’s ongoing commitment to creating an inclusive environment where every student can thrive. Through mentorship programs, academic support and a strong sense of community, Oglethorpe empowers first-generation students to take pride in their accomplishments and confidently shape their future.
