Oglethorpe faculty achieve recognition through scholarly work

At Oglethorpe, faculty have one priority: teaching students. Preparing them to lead lives that are meaningful and impactful.

And they are constantly improving their craft, contributing their expertise to producing influential research, thought leadership, arts, music, and culture.

Here are a few recent accomplishments, accolades, and publications from Oglethorpe faculty this semester:聽

Dr. Andrew Schmidt, assistant professor of music, recently had a manuscript published by “Action, Criticism, & Theory in Music Education.” The article is available to be

Christina Price Washington,聽assistant professor of art, has been invited to contribute her photography to several exhibitions around Atlanta:

  • “Photography’s New Vision: Experiments in Seeing,” an exhibition at the High Museum of Art
  • “Eyes on Atlanta: Lumen: Women and Nonbinary Artists” at Atlanta Photography Group
  • “Faculty Lounge: Art Beyond Office Hours” at聽Woodstock Arts

Additionally, Washington co-curated Atlanta Photography Group’s booth at the 2025 Atlanta Art Fair at Pullman Yards. The booth was highlighted as the 鈥渂est-curated booth鈥 by guest curator Melissa Messina in .

Dr. Anna Ziering, assistant professor of women’s, gender, and sexuality studies, will have her work, “Passing, by Nella Larsen,” featured in the 2026 publication of the literary journal “Short Story Criticism.”

Dr. Justin Haynes, associate professor of English, has been shortlisted for the Center for Fiction’s 2025 First Novel Prize for his debut novel, “Ibis.” His book tour earlier in the year took him to many places in and out of the country 鈥 including Trinidad and Tobago.

Elizabeth Peterson-Jennings, director of the , recently co-curated a retrospective of acclaimed photographer Al Clayton titled “Al Clayton Photography: Lost and Found.” The exhibition was recently featured in the

Dr. Jeffrey H. Collins,聽senior lecturer in interdisciplinary studies, published his 14th book titled “Litanies of Longing.” He is also looking to complete “The Refractive Universe,” a series of essays in astronomy, archaeology, botany, geology, AI, nanotechnology and the future of humankind.

Dr. Rebecca Schmerer, senior lecturer in Core studies, recently published an article in the .

Dr. Edward Rosser, assistant provost and registrar, successfully defended and passed his dissertation. Rosser’s dissertation, 鈥淧erceptions of Technology in the Academic Advisement of Black and Brown Undergraduate Students at Two Southeastern Historically Black Colleges and Universities: A Qualitative Phenomenological Study of Leveraging Student Engagement in Academic Advisement鈥澛爃as been submitted to the Open Journal Systems (OJS) of the Robert W. Woodruff Library of the Atlanta University Center for publication.

Dr. Stephen Herschler Mattern, professor of politics, joined the Advisory Board of the Governor’s Teaching Fellows, as an alumnus (2024-25) of the program to provide a private institution perspective.
