Oglethorpe students enrolled in THE-490-001: Theatre Management are exploring the behind-the-scenes work and challenges that come with running a successful arts organization.Â
The course introduces students to the full scope of managing a nonprofit arts company, from developing a mission to building compelling marketing campaigns. Under the guidance of Alex Scollon, part-time theatre instructor and the managing director of , students worked collaboratively to create their own not-for-profit theatre company from the ground up.Â
The semester-long project required thoughtful decision-making at every step, including selecting a location, developing a season lineup, designing promotional plans and creating fundraising campaigns within a realistic budget.Â
A highlight of the course was the opportunity to learn directly from leaders in the Atlanta arts community. Guest lecturers, ranging from philanthropy experts to marketing professionals, shared practical advice, led mock meetings and offered students a genuine look at the challenges art organizations face.Â

Theatre major James Patrick ’26 found these interactions invaluable, as they improved his understanding of running a theatre company.Â
“Before taking this class, as an actor, I was unfamiliar with the process of how shows come together from an administrative lens or the business side of theater,” said Patrick. “This opened doors to what I can do off the stage but still stay in the theater world. It sparked my interest and bridged the gap between business and the arts, opening my eyes to the possibilities after graduation.”
By the end of the semester, Theatre Management students gained real-world skills, industry connections and a deeper appreciation for the people and work that bring performances to life. The course properly equipped them for their own future careers as leaders, artists and professionals.Â
